If you are not using enchantments - start!
I would save your XP for enchanting diamond tools if you can.
30 levels of experience is good for a maximum enchantment on a piece of equipment. It makes a huge difference.
Knockback on a sword is great for beating up creepers.
Potions, there are a number op fire resistance and speed potions in the chest next to the enchanting table. Help yourself.
Fire resistance should actually read fire immunity, with it you can actually swim in lava!
Note: I'm not sure but I think going through a nether portal will break a potion effect, so use them accordingly.

LOL
Highest level I think I have attained is level 3. I die so much I never get anywhere. I do have iron armor that I should wear but most times I die I can never recover the lost items thus the armor goes poof!
